Fluid experiment

Undertow

Drag through the dye. Watch the flow pull it apart.

The curls come from a two-dimensional fluid. A steady drive feeds its motion; pressure keeps it from compressing. Dye moves with that flow, stretching into thin ribbons as neighboring patches take different paths. Dragging pushes the fluid and adds more dye.

This is a fluid experiment in dimensionless units. The colors show which dye dominates locally, with contrast added to separate mixed patches. Lighting makes the edges easier to see.
